Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - Demonstrating in force that last evening's plea for community participation was more than just feel-good talk, the EC2055 design team spent the better part of today in an extensive series of meetings with county residents of all stripes.
Beginning with a gathering of elected officials and community leaders from throughout Early County, including county and city commissioners, representatives from the Development Authority, and the Early County Planning Commission, the day ultimately covered a wide range of subjects, including meetings devoted to: Student Leaders; the River, Tourism and Regional Attractions; Health and Education; Transportation; Young Couples; and Commercial Businesses.
The response, as EC2055 designers have come to expect, was one of enthusiasm (Read summaries of the individual meetings here).
Back at the Design Studio, the architecture team of Victor Deupi and Fabio Paoletti met face to face with key property owners from around the Blakely square and presented ideas - like the "Omaha Arcade" - for enhancing their buildings, the facades and public spaces surrounding their property.
All of the ideas offered by the architects involved things that would best serve to restore the square as the thriving center of community it once was. As such, strategies that favored retail viability, gathering places, walkability and street life were key.
Finally, the full team gathered back at the Design Studio and shared the many things learned throughout the day. Beginning tomorrow, this expanse of information provided by the citizens of Early County - both in the Economic Opportunities Weekend and over the past few days - will become the basis for extensive drawing and development of ideas.
Stay tuned.
