The Waters

June 2008

A School Model. A Model School.
On May 21st, the Town of Pike Road hosted the first Pike Road Education Summit at the Town Square at The Waters. In addition to the unveiling of a scale model depicting the town’s vision for its K-12 school, residents learned about the nature of the curriculum that has been developed, and learned from educators from across the country regarding the best way to leverage the Pike Road School as a Professional Development School.

This event featured a number of speakers, including a keynote address by Dr. Catherine Emihovich, who has been Dean of the College of Education at the University of Florida since 2002. Dr. Emihovich is also the new President of the Holmes Partnership, an organization that serves as a major vehicle to reform teaching and learning in K-18 education venues. The key principles of the Holmes Partnership have guided the establishment of the affiliation between the Pike Road Educational System for Excellence in Teaching and four universities: Alabama State, Auburn, Auburn Montgomery and Troy.

The school model is currently on display in The Waters’ sales center.

The Sweet Life on Lake Sweet T
In May came the release of new homes on Lake Sweet T. Perched high on the hill, these lakefront, double-story porch designs offer delightful water views and the stunning sunsets that come with them, as well as easy access to shoreline parkland, tennis and basketball.

Biking for a Good Cause. Again and Again.
For the third year in a row, The Waters played host recently to the "Wheelin' and Healin" charity biking event to support Kid One, which arranges transportation to medical facilities for needy children and expectant mothers. The event raised over $15,000 and included three different events: A 62 mile course; a 32 mile course; and a 20 mile course for children. Upon completion, participants enjoyed live music and refreshments.

Alabama Greenhouse and Blog Debut
Now that our 2008 EnergyKey Demonstration Home has broken ground, we’ll be chronicling its construction on our Alabama Greenhouse blog. The home is a collaborative effort between The Waters, Parker Brothers Construction, and the Home Builders Association of Alabama. In the coming months, the blog will be presenting all kinds of news, photos and video to introduce you to the ideas and challenges associated with green building — the materials and products, the construction methods and, perhaps most importantly, the results.

Old Cars, New Traditions
The Capital City Street Rod Association descended on The Waters recently, sponsoring an Antique Car Show where a host of classics were displayed for the entire community to enjoy. In addition to a healthy dose of hot-roddin’ heritage, the crew also enjoyed riding around on some of our favorites: the neighborhood electric vehicles that have become so popular with our residents.

Family Fun, with a Message
During a recent fundraiser for Footprints Ministries, neighbors at The Waters were treated to live music, food, dunking booth, sack races, and big-fun inflatables. A good time, a good cause.
