Montgomery Case Study

Montgomery, Alabama is filled with great history. From the Civil War to Civil Rights, some of the country’s key events happened in Alabama’s state capital. Today, Montgomery is building a new history — one centered on the idea of sustainability. To do this, the city has become a national leader in regulatory reform that enables sustainable development. A key part of this new history is Montgomery’s form-based SmartCode.

With the SmartCode in place for the city’s downtown and other key growth areas, Montgomery, Alabama has become one of the leading adopters of the SmartCode. Learn more about how this Southern capital became a national SmartCode leader at the webinar from Montgomery’s own Chad Emerson.

Chad Emerson is Director of Development for the City of Montgomery Alabama, professor of law at Faulkner University’s Jones School of Law, and has provided legal calibration on numerous form-based codes. He is a frequent international lecturer and author in the field of land planning law with a specific emphasis on Smart Growth and SmartCode legal issues. He is the author of The SmartCode Solution to Sprawl and organizer of SmartCode Advanced.
